Sam Roberts: It’s time for Albany to Shape Up

It’s no secret that Albany’s bogged down with corruption and dysfunction, and that our families and neighborhoods are suffering for it. While entrenched politicians bicker, posture and squabble their way to stalemate after stalemate, Central New York’s all but forgotten – left to wither from constant neglect.

It’s not until Albany gets its act together that our communities will finally get the attention, consideration and good-paying jobs they deserve, and that’s why I have a plan to whip state government into shape. I’ve been named a Hero of Reform by the nonpartisan NY Uprising, and together with Andrew Cuomo, I’ll work to cut through the mess by:

• Requiring full disclosure of legislators’ outside income;
• Stripping crooked politicians of their pensions;
• Creating stricter budgeting guidelines to rein in state spending;
• Consolidating agencies and local governments; and
• Taking the politics out of the redistricting process through an independent commission.

As a former Onondaga County Legislator, I have a record of reform. I worked to downsize local government, impose term limits on legislators – including myself – and consolidate city and county government agencies. I’ll use that experience and a similar formula to make good on my pledge to get Albany in line.

The path ahead isn’t easy, and change won’t happen overnight. But with your support, I’ll work my tail off in the Assembly to get our state back on track.

DeWitt, NY - Sam Roberts upset Phil LaTessa, the Democratic Party pick, in Tuesday’s primary election for the 119th Assembly District.

Roberts, a long-time Onondaga County legislator, won 45 percent of the vote against LaTessa, the Syracuse city auditor, and Jane Fahey-Suddaby, according to unofficial results from the Onondaga County Board of Elections.
